Body Lift Surgery

Dr. Pincus performs body lift surgery to offer a solution for patients struggling with excess skin and fat.

One negative side effect of substantial weight loss is that it can leave you with loose, sagging skin and stubborn pockets of fat that won’t go away even if you exercise and eat a balanced diet. It can be disheartening to have droopy skin that hides your waistline and natural body contours—especially if you’ve experienced major weight loss but can’t enjoy your results due to the excess saggy skin. Skin that hangs over the body can also cause uncomfortable chafing and make it difficult to find clothes that fit well.

A body lift can remove sagging skin and stubborn fat, allowing patients to show off their sculpted bodies and feel confident in their own skin.

What Is a Body Lift?

Rarely has a procedure been more of a comprehensive solution to people frustrated about sagging skin after losing a substantial amount of weight. Though they should feel happiness over improving their overall health and a sense of accomplishment, too often, the rolls and folds of skin that still remain are a constant reminder of the weight they once carried. Body lift surgery involves removing excess sagging skin and stubborn fat to improve the appearance of the body and skin. Treatment areas typically include the stomach, lower back, buttocks, and thighs.

Am I a Candidate for
Body Lift Surgery?

A body lift can be performed on men and women who have sufficient excess skin and fat that they want to remove. Other factors that contribute to being a good candidate for this procedure are:

  • In good overall health
  • Having loose, sagging skin
  • Having stubborn pockets of fat
  • Being a nonsmoker or willing to quit smoking
  • If you’re at or near your goal weight
  • Able to maintain a stable weight

Schedule your consultation with Dr. Pincus to find out if you’re a good candidate for a body lift.

What Are My Options
for My Body Lift?

The body areas treated with this surgery will vary from patient to patient, depending on where their stubborn fat is stored and how much excess skin they possess. Many patients want a body lift to address fat and loose skin in the abdominal area, as this region tends to hold fat that is tough to remove without surgery. Droopy skin and poorly distributed fat in the back, buttocks, and thighs are also commonly dealt with during body lift surgery.

A consultation with Dr. Pincus will best determine both the extent of a body lift and the following steps to proceed, given a patient’s objectives.

How Is Body Lift Surgery Performed?

Before surgery begins, you’ll be given IV sedation or general anesthesia to make you comfortable during the procedure. Your surgeon will then create incisions based on what body area is being treated. The most common incision technique follows a bikini-like pattern around the lower body, stretching from the lower abdomen around the back and down to the buttocks. These incisions allow Dr. Pincus to reposition the tissues, remove excess fat, trim off excess skin, and adjust the remaining skin. You’ll have firm skin and smooth body contours once the skin is pulled down and tightened properly.

What Is the Recovery From a Body Lift Like?

Your recovery will depend on the treatment area on which your body lift was performed. In most cases, your treatment area will be wrapped in bandages and compression garments, which you must wear until Dr. Pincus clears you to remove them.

It’s normal to experience some bruising and swelling in the treatment area after surgery. A pain management plan will usually include medications to ease discomfort during the initial period following the procedure. You should have someone available to drive you home and assist with daily tasks such as meal preparation and housekeeping while you recover. Wearing your compression garment will help reduce the swelling and help your skin adjust. Most patients need to take around two weeks to rest and let their bodies heal before they can return to their daily activities. While gentle walks are encouraged to keep circulation healthy during recovery, strenuous activities and exercise typically must be avoided for at least six weeks after surgery.

Since all body lifts are customized to the individual patient’s needs, every recovery process will also look slightly different. Be kind to your body and let the healing process take place. It’s essential to listen to Dr. Pincus’s aftercare instructions and attend all necessary follow-up appointments to ensure a safe recovery.

What Results Can I Expect After a Body Lift?

After surgery, you’ll see a noticeable difference in your body, as removing excess skin has a big impact. Not only will rashes caused by skin chafing usually clear up, but patients also report feeling lighter and more mobile in physical activities without extra skin swinging around. Clothes will fit differently. Many patients shop for new, more fashionable options that they might have previously avoided out of embarrassment. Your full results will take some time to develop; however, they are designed to last a long time, so you should be able to enjoy them for many years.

Scars will form at the incision sites but will fade over time. What’s most important is that the folds of excess skin are permanently gone. While your body lift results are long-lasting, it’s important to note that this surgery cannot stop your body from naturally aging. Your skin will naturally lose some firmness as you age and may sag. Even as you age, your body contours will still look better after a body lift than they would have without surgery.

How Much Does a Body Lift Cost?

A body lift is classified as a cosmetic surgery, which typically makes it ineligible for insurance coverage,

but policies among individual carriers will vary, especially if there is documentation about loose skin causing rashes and other issues. Your body lift cost in Smithtown, NY, will include your surgeon’s fee and a few other key factors. The total price will depend on medical tests needed before surgery, anesthesia fees, surgical facility costs, compression garments, and any medications prescribed for recovery.
