How to Prepare for Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

The best way to prepare for your consultation is to think about the results you are looking for, what the entire breast augmentation experience will entail, and pertinent questions to ask the surgeon. The following guidelines can help you feel confident that you will get all the information you need to make an informed decision about this plastic surgery procedure.

What Questions Will I Be Asked During My Consultation?

A reputable plastic surgeon will review your medical history, current medications or supplements, and lifestyle habits like tobacco use and alcohol consumption. If they feel you are a good candidate for breast augmentation, they will ask:

  • Your present bra cup size
  • Your desired breast size
  • Your desired breast shape
  • Your daily physical activities

Below are some other questions your surgeon may ask during your one-on-one meeting.

What is your desired breast implant profile?

Breast implant profiles refer to the degree of the implant’s projection from the chest wall. During your consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon, they will ask about the type of profile you had in mind for your aesthetic goals:

  • Low-profile breast implants feature a wider base with minimal forward projection and are suitable for women with broader chests or those seeking subtle enhancement.
  • Moderate-profile implants offer a balance of width and projection and work well for most body types.
  • High-profile breast implants provide maximum forward projection and are best for women with a smaller chest width and those desiring a more dramatic, noticeable enhancement.

Breast augmentation recovery information

During a breast augmentation consultation, your surgeon should give you a summary of what to expect during recovery. In turn, ask as many questions as possible to gain peace of mind and set realistic expectations. The recovery timeline after breast augmentation varies from person to person but generally includes a short period of swelling followed by plenty of rest and light exercise.

Top Questions to Ask During a Breast Augmentation Consultation

It’s difficult to single out one question as the most important to ask, as many factors should be evaluated before having plastic surgery. The following basic questions will help you understand more about the breast augmentation procedure and how it can be customized to help you achieve your unique goals.

What will my breasts look like with implants?

Your breast augmentation results will depend on your choice of breast implant type, size, profile, and placement. Your plastic surgeon will help you decide which options are best for you based on your preferences and body frame during the consultation.

Breast Implant Types

  • Silicone Breast Implants: Sientra® silicone implants consist of soft silicone shells that are pre-filled with silicone gel. Silicone breast implants feel more natural and are less likely to rupture or leak than saline implants but require periodic imaging to detect silent leaks.
  • Saline Breast Implants: These implants are also made with silicone shells but are filled with sterile saltwater during surgery. They typically feel slightly firmer than silicone implants and require sufficient natural breast tissue or submuscular placement to avoid rippling.
  • Composite Breast Augmentation: Patients can choose to combine their implants with fat grafting techniques for enhanced results that look and feel more natural. In addition, adding fat grafting to your augmentation provides more implant coverage, creating a softer overall look.

3D imaging technology like Crisalix Virtual Aesthetics is sometimes used during your consultation to provide a clear, lifelike preview of your potential results.

How and where will my breast implants be placed?

There are two main breast implant placement options:

  • Submuscular Placement: Placing breast implants under the pectoral muscles provides a natural appearance and is ideal for women with little natural breast tissue as it prevents the edges of the implants or rippling from showing through the skin.
  • Subglandular Placement: Placing the implants above the chest muscles and under the glandular breast tissue provides a more dramatic outcome.

What are my incision options?

You and your surgeon will discuss incision options during your consultation and choose the best one for your needs. The most popular incisions include the periareolar incision, made around the areola, and the inframammary incision, made along the crease at the bottom of the breast.

How long after breast augmentation can I drive?

You can typically resume driving once you’ve stopped taking prescription pain medications and feel comfortable enough to operate a vehicle. For most patients, this is around one to two weeks after the procedure. Always follow your surgeon’s advice regarding when it’s safe to drive again.
